Architects no longer understand what building systems integration is but still use the word to
portray a false knowledge of design. Clients experience systems integration in every product that they use except for the buildings that they occupy. There is more architecture on a shelf in Walmart than there is in the city where the Walmart resides. Architecture has become not about how the building operates but rather the faux façade that completes the expression of the concept. In order for the architectural field to survive in the future and be able to provide
innovation solutions to persistent problems facing mankind, we, as architects, need to re-educate ourselves on how to make a functional building that takes into account, and implements, every building system in an effective way, from the start of the design process. This is the only way to create real architecture, and in doing so, we may uncover new perceptions of what architecture is.
